CHAPTER 10
SHANK
Everything is in place and weâre ready to rock. We gave Howell a GPS marker and the munitions were dropped off on the island by parachute within a couple of hours. In turn, he let us know that the rendezvous with the kidnappers is set for 5 p.m. tomorrow afternoon. The location is a barn on a remote farm outside the city of Algiers. We told him we didnât need anything else from him since we have all our own equipment.
John Dough made good on his promise that the CIA would supply everything we needed. In fact, the man is like a magician with a bottomless hat. Whatever we asked for, we got, and then some.
Jax, Nathan, Sal, and I are being flown in on one of the CIAâs stealth aircraft. The four of us are going to parachute down within range of the rendezvous point and the crates with the munitions will be parachuted down at the same time. We will go on foot from the dropoff point. Each of us will be fitted with a tracker and an earpiece before we jump, and the crates containing the munitions have been fitted with microscopic tracking devices as well.
Smitty and Scotty are with John Dough on a different plane on their way to a location in Algiers from where they will do surveillance and keep in touch with us. As soon as the munitions have been delivered and Storm has been handed over, CIA operatives will move in and get her out while we go after the munitions and do the cleanup.
Thatâs the plan, but previous experience has proven thatâs most likely not how itâs going to be. With the faction wars going on in Algiers right now, the area is extra hot, and weâve got to be ready for anything.
Algeria is five hours ahead of Puerto Rico and if things go as planned, we will be parachuting down at around 2 p.m. Algiers time. Itâs going to be at least an hourâs hike from the dropzone to the farm since weâll be carrying the two crates with us. That gives us two hours or so to survey the area, and for us, thatâs enough. Weâve gone in with a lot less time than that.
When we left, Jelena hugged Jax tight and the two of them held onto each other for several moments before he pulled away from her and joined us in the Jeep that was taking us to the plane. Itâs Jaxâs first mission since he married Jelena and I could see it was hard for them to say goodbye. When youâre doing the kind of work that we do, and youâre in a relationship, it makes things complicated. I suppose thatâs one of the reasons why most SEALs just stick to one-night stands and casual relationships. They say that once your heart gets involved, it can easily cloud your judgment. I can sure as hell attest to that now.
Iâve been trying to condition myself to think
